Post-Operative Care

Whether you have elected to have surgery, or it was brought upon by trauma, it is a serious investment in your health. Surgery is expensive. Often it requires you to take time off work and your physical hobbies. It is mentally and physically taxing. Orthopedic and/or spinal surgery is tough. You need to adopt a warrior mindset to get through the next YEAR. When you make the choice to do what it takes to get your life back Onofray Physical Therapy can help. You’ve got this!!!

You may not always realize that any kind of orthopedic surgery is a big deal. It can leave you weak, immobilized, in pain, and often depressed. Everyone’s goal is to recover quickly and completely. Post-surgical recovery is a process that can be frustrating and mentally challenging, but physical activity can have a positive effect on your emotional and psychological state. Exercise releases endorphins that help create a sense of well-being while enhancing your overall mood. Onofray Physical Therapy is here to get you through it all!

Encouraging clients to move is key to a healthy recovery. Onofray Physical Therapy helps clients regain mobility and recover faster after surgery because we devote our entire treatment session to you. You receive our full attention and we have the experience and knowledge to ensure that any replacements or repairs made during surgery heal properly.

After surgery, you may have specific limitations that your surgeon wants you to adhere to. Onofray Physical Therapy can help guide you through your post-operative rehabilitation program to get you back to your normal lifestyle quickly and safely. Most physicians recommend starting physical therapy immediately after your surgery. You should expect your physical therapist to perform a detailed evaluation of your unique situation, including defining your specific goals. You will begin with simple exercises involving flexing and stretching before moving on to more intense exercise as you progress. Part of your therapist’s job is to safely push you to make progress even when you don’t think you can. After major surgery, just taking a few steps can be a big deal, and the sense of accomplishment that clients feel as they progress is why Onofray Physical Therapy is in this business!

Who are candidates for post-surgical recovery with Onofray Physical Therapy?

  • Rotator Cuff and Shoulder Labral Repair:  Physical therapy following shoulder tendon repair is imperative to regain mobility, strength and function. Frozen shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis) can develop quickly without proper mobility after shoulder surgery thus prolonging your pain and your recovery. Onofray Physical Therapy excels at shoulder repair rehabilitation.

  • Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) and Medial Cruciate Ligament (MCL) repair:  Physical therapy is a MUST following repair to the ACL knee ligament (often a problem for athletes) along with tears to the meniscal cartilage. Clients can heal faster and avoid re-injury by building quadriceps and hamstring strength.

  • Back Surgery:  Due to the especially delicate nature of a spinal fusion or disk surgery supervised physical therapy is essential. At Onofray Physical Therapy, your therapist will help you with gentle stretches and exercises to get the blood flowing and gradually work up to daily activities.

  • Joint Replacement Surgery:  For knee and replacement surgeries, physical therapy can begin the day after surgery to help strengthen the muscles around the new joint and help you regain motion in the joint. If you have your shoulder joint replaced, you can usually begin exercising the same day of your surgery! Your physical therapist will help you with gentle, range-of-motion exercises. Therapy helps clients regain mobility and get back to their routine faster.

Megan has been treating my elderly aunts for a while now, and I cannot express how grateful I am. She is truly amazing, and somehow motivates them to exercise, move, and get stronger, more than anyone else can! She is an expert in the field of physical therapy, and notifies me immediately if there is anything going on medically with either one of them, that needs further work up. She regularly communicates with me, and even facetimes me with them, so we can say hello (I am out of the state). I am a therapist in the healthcare industry myself, and cannot say enough good things about the excellent service Megan provides!
